Mandala No.1 is a mesmerizing watercolour of vibrant blues, fiery reds and delicate golden tones that radiate with energy and vitality. Balance and symmetry make this artwork a captivating reflection of the profound beauty created by combining harmonious, geometric principles with the free-flowing liveliness of curvilinear decoration.
Design story
In the ancient Sanskrit language, mandala means “circle” or “discoid" but its deeper meaning relates to "seeing the whole Universe at once". Traditionally circular, symmetrical, geometric designs, they hold great symbolism across cultures. The true act of creating mandala is a deeply sacred and spiritual practice, a calling down of spirits, and the visual created is not kept but swept away at the end of the ritual. The drawing of mandala has been widely adopted into modern, western, culture as a peaceful and calming experience to invite meditation.
My composition was constructed by designing a segment that spans an eighth of the circle and then reflecting and rotating that unit around the central point. The adorning elements are inspired by motifs found across Persian and Turkish decorative arts.
After leaving school, my creative practice took a backseat in my life for many years. This was the first real piece of art I had created since my school days and it marks a significant turning point in my life.
